Washington Branch Mitigation Bank

The Washington Branch Mitigation Bank is a 128-acre wetland mitigation bank along the Little River in Wilkes County, Georgia. Situated within the Upper Savannah River Basin, the Bank restores, enhances, and permanently protects a large floodplain wetland system that provides important ecological functions for the surrounding watershed. The bank provides wetland mitigation credits that support public and private infrastructure projects, allowing development needs to be met while ensuring long-term conservation and resource protection.

Site History 

Historically used for timber harvesting and agricultural production, areas of the site have been cutover and cleared. Over time, these land use practices contributed to reduced habitat quality and the loss of some natural floodplain functions. These changes diminished the site's hydraulic and ecological functions, creating an opportunity for restoration.

Restoration Approach

The project enhances more than 32 acres of historically disturbed wetlands and preserves nearly 52 acres of existing forested wetlands, re-establishing native bottomland hardwood communities and improving connectivity across the Little River floodplain. Restoration activities increase floodwater storage, improve water quality, support groundwater recharge, and enhance habitat for native wildlife. The project also advances conservation priorities identified in Georgia's State Wildlife Action Plan, including the protection and restoration of bottomland hardwood forests and associated wetland habitats.
