Overview

The Walker Farms Site is 45.1 acres in Screven County, Georgia, operating under the Georgia Agricultural Wetland Bank (GAWB). It is located amongst several existing conservation lands, and the restoration and protection of WFS will provide greater habitat connectivity between these areas. It provides compensatory mitigation for wetland losses from agricultural activities, with 41 acres of wetland restoration supported by 4.1 acres of buffer.

Site History

Prior to restoration, the Walker Farms Site was historically used for organic vegetable crop production. To support agricultural operations, a center pivot irrigation system was installed and drainage ditches were excavated across the site. Regular farming activities ceased around 2016, after which the land went fallow and became overgrown with agricultural weeds, wetland plants, and young pine and willow saplings.

Restoration Approach

To restore this land, WES disabled existing drainage ditches to prevent the rapid transport of surface and subsurface water offsite. WES also planted native tree and shrub species to reestablish vegetation characteristic of a forested wetland. Together, these actions are intended to support the development of a self-sustaining forested wetland and species habitat characteristic of the coastal plain landscape.
