Overview

The Gilmore Wetland Site is 61.5 acres in Jefferson County, Georgia, operating under the Georgia Agricultural Wetland Bank (GAWB). It provides compensatory mitigation for wetland losses from agricultural activities, with 54.51 acres designated for wetland restoration and 6.6 acres of upland buffer.

Site History

Prior to restoration, the Gilmore Wetland Site was utilized for silviculture for several decades. Before the early 1970s, a network of drainage ditches was excavated to dry out the site for timber production, significantly reducing the wetland’s natural water levels and ecological function. While some native hardwood forest remains along the northern and western edges, the site as a whole has been degraded and is well-suited for restoration.

Restoration Approach

To restore this land, WES decommissioned the drainage ditches, allowing rainfall and groundwater to naturally collect and remain on site. To improve vegetation, pine trees were removed and prescribed fire was implemented to prepare the site for planting.  Native wetland trees and shrubs suited to the site’s wet conditions were planted where pine was removed and invasive species were treated in existing forested areas. Upland buffer areas surrounding the wetlands were also planted to provide additional protection and enhance the overall ecological value of the site.
