The Frolona Farms Mitigation Bank is 186 acres in Heard County, Georgia, within the Middle Chattahoochee Watershed (HUC 03130002), with Crews Creek bisecting the property. The bank provides compensatory mitigation credits for stream impacts, preserving and restoring approximately 22,178 linear feet of perennial and intermittent streams.
Site History
Historically used for agriculture, timber production, and cattle grazing, the property experienced stream alterations including channel straightening, dredging, and the loss of native streamside vegetation. Over time, these activities contributed to floodplain disconnection, streambank erosion, and reduced aquatic habitat quality. These changes diminished the site's hydraulic and ecological functions, creating an opportunity for restoration.
Restoration Approach
The project will restore and preserve more than 11,425 linear feet of perennial streams and 10,753 linear feet of non-perennial streams across the Bank. Restoration activities include reconnecting Crews Creek to its floodplain, reestablishing native riparian vegetation, constructing stable stream channels at appropriate elevations, and installing natural wood and stone features to improve habitat complexity. These efforts will enhance stream stability, support aquatic habitat, improve water quality, and increase the floodplain's ability to store and convey water during high-flow events. By restoring degraded stream systems and protecting a large riparian corridor, the Bank will provide a sustainable mitigation solution for projects requiring stream impact offsets within the region.
