Overview
WES is providing compensatory mitigation for the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s Interstate 24 Southeast Choice Lanes Project. Located within the Stones River watershed in Rutherford County, Tennessee, the Buzzard Branch Mitigation Site focuses on stream restoration, enhancement, and dam removal. The project marks WES’s first dam removal project, a significant milestone in our work to restore and protect aquatic ecosystems.
The project includes the removal of a low-head dam on the Middle Fork Stones River, restoring more than 3,200 linear feet of river channel and re-establishing a free-flowing river system. Additional restoration activities include improvements along Buzzard Branch, native hardwood planting, exotic species control, and permanent protection and management of the site.
