A Flagship Restoration Success in the Delta
The Cosumnes Floodplain Mitigation Bank, developed by Westervelt Ecological Services (WES), is a 472-acre restoration project at the confluence of the Cosumnes and Mokelumne Rivers. This award-winning site transformed former degraded agricultural land into a thriving wetland and species habitat, reconnecting the landscape to natural floodplain processes and providing critical benefits for the region.
With construction finished in 2009, the bank now supports towering cottonwoods, willows, and other native plant species. The floodplain habitat provides nutrients and shelter for juvenile chinook and steelhead salmon migrating downriver, helping to support healthy fish populations.
Surveys done along with the 2024 Christmas Bird Count observed over 70 species of birds on the property. These accomplishments highlight the Cosumnes Floodplain Mitigation Bank’s remarkable success and ongoing growth as a vibrant wetland and species habitat.
