Bear Creek Mitigation Bank - Now Offering Federal and State Wetland Mitigation Credits

Westervelt Ecological Services (WES) is excited to announce that the Bear Creek Mitigation Bank has approved state and federal credits available within the mitigation service area. Approved in 2018, the Bank now provides additional mitigation options to local communities. The Bear Creek service area includes areas around the Chipola and Apalachicola watersheds, including Bay, Calhoun, and Gulf Counties, Florida.

Located in Bearthick Swamp, the Bank is in a high-priority ecological corridor for the Apalachicola National Forest and other large conservation areas. Mitigation activities on the site include preserving and enhancing cypress basin swamp, wet prairie, and mesic flatwoods. In addition, WES maintains the site through prescribed burns, select thinning, exotic species control, reforestation, and hydraulic enhancements.

State Credits: Freshwater Wet Prairie/Wet Flatwoods, and Forested Wetland

Federal Credits: Palustrine Emergent, and Palustrine Forested

Spent lots of time at Bear Creek with Florida Environmental & Land Services, Inc. establishing baseline monitoring transects and monitoring hydrologic data. Can’t wait to see the restoration progress!
